I don’t know about you, but I see another classic picture book in the making. Here’s the do-it-yourself Read poster I made of Vaunda back in 2009, using ALA Graphics Read software (3). I asked Jan if she would apply her unique skills and vision to a portrait of Vaunda, who has herself been a Very Brave Cowgirl. Author/illustrator Jan Thomas ( Let’s Sing a Lullaby with the Brave Cowboy, Rhyming Dust Bunnies, Pumpkin Trouble, and many more) did a hilarious presentation at my library for Dia de los Ninos in April, and a lovely interview right here (2). Many of the worlds created here were vivid and engrossing - I would almost describe the sensation of being immersed in them as delicious, and also incredibly empowering. ![]() ![]() The pieces in Dark Matter make clear the incredible diversity of the African continent, the fact that the indigenous peoples of Africa had and have civilizations with different names, histories, languages, and customs, and even looked different from one another in ways that are meaningful.įor many of these stories, such as Cherene Sherrard's The Quality of Sand, and Kiini Ibura Salaam's "Desire," it felt like discovering jewels, each as brilliant as the last even though different. One thing I really appreciated about this anthology was the way it completely belies what Chimamanda Ngozi-Adichie calls the "single story" of Africa: the Western idea of Africa as a homogenous place about which if you've heard one story, you've heard them all. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We first meet a family of three girls Cassie, Nichole and Karen who are It was a welcome read that balanced the emotional and mental aspects of marriage, and illustrated that not every marriage is the same. Nichole was admirable in the face of Jake’s bullying, and even though Leanne was way further along in her marriage to Sean, I could see where her head was at to some degree. This is a story that would resonate with many, with the rate of divorce being what it is. Together they give each other the support and courage to embark on a new chapter of their lives. When Nichole leaves her cheating husband Jake, Leanne quickly follows in her daughter-in-law’s footsteps and also leaves her husband, Sean, who has been having affairs for decades.
